Expedition Preparations (Physical)

These next few blog posts will focus on different types of preparedness and what I did to ready myself for this expedition. What I want to accomplish, is demonstrate to students and anyone reading this blog, that when you set your mind to do something (like going on this expedition), you don't just show up and everything is done for you. Realistically, you'll have a number of areas to focus some discipline. Often, it can be difficult and painful, but the reward for setting and accomplishing goals is highly rewarding. The following list was key in my preparation:

  • Physical - Weightlifting and cardiovascular

  • Financial - Personal and sponsorship money from companies and groups

  • Emotional - Personal and occupational stress

  • Technical - Hewlett Packard Computers, cameras, blogs and working with the Meridian School District IT specialists

  • Gear - Need to know what is needed and where to purchase

  1. Physical Preparation - To get in shape, my son and I would typically work out together at the YMCA. My workout consisted of a 45 min cardio session spent running on the treadmill or stationary bike. Then I would work on weights to isolate different muscles of the body. Here is a short clip on physical preparation. A couple of my daughters had fun directing this movie on a new Flip video camera while at the YMCA (this camera will be included in my technical preparation posting).

Now, I'm not in my peak performance, but I have manged to lose 12 lbs and build some muscle. I still have some work to accomplish my overall goal, but the key is I have a goal and I haven't given up.
